The Samajwadi Party has suffered a crushing defeat in the by-elections of Azamgarh and Rampur Lok Sabha constituencies. These Lok Sabha constituencies were seen as the stronghold of the Samajwadi Party. Due to the outright support of Muslim voters, Azamgarh seat was dominated by Yadav family and Rampur seat was dominated by Azam Khan. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the SP had won both these seats even in the strong wave of the BJP. But in only two and a half years, SP has to face defeat in both these forts. Did Akhilesh Yadav get angry at Muslims?
Why were Muslims angry?
In fact, it is believed that a feeling has arisen in a large section of Muslims that Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav always remains silent on the issues in which Muslims are being wronged. It is alleged that when bulldozers were plying on the homes of Muslims, Akhilesh Yadav kept quiet and did not stand with the Muslims. He did not do the work of putting the administration in the dock. Even when the issue of Gyanvapi was going on, he did not openly stand in favor of Muslims. Many Muslim leaders of the Samajwadi Party also left the party on this issue.
It is alleged that he did not even favor Azam Khan, the big Muslim leader of the party trapped in bad times. People believe that if they had agitated in favor of Azam Khan, the Yogi Adityanath government would not have kept him in jail for a long time, but Akhilesh Yadav never openly took the side of Azam Khan on these issues. As a result, Azam Khan remained in jail for a long time and had to fight for his release single-handedly. Due to these reasons, Muslims went on getting angry with Akhilesh Yadav. It is believed that due to the displeasure of Muslims in this election, the SP candidates have suffered a crushing defeat.
Big leaders of SP did not come out for campaigning
- Only the displeasure of Muslims has not overshadowed the SP. The shortcomings of its own leaders are also being held responsible for the defeat of the party. Akhilesh Yadav and other big leaders did not give strength to the campaign in both these seats. At the same time, the BJP made frequent use of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as well as Manoj Tiwari and other star campaigners.
- The rift between the SP leaders has also weighed heavily on the party’s defeat. It is being said that the SP workers did not put any pressure on their voters to cast their votes, while the BJP was busy taking out every single vote and taking it to the booth. At the same time, there was a division of votes among the Muslim voters of SP-BSP in a Muslim-dominated seat like Azamgarh, which benefited the BJP and won it.
- There is also an allegation that the Samajwadi Party has repeatedly imposed external candidates on the local people. Only being a member of the Yadav family was the guarantee of victory, while the local BJP candidates not only outperformed the SP candidates in terms of popularity, but the support for them also increased among the common people.
BSP and administration defeated: SP
Samajwadi Party national spokesperson IP Singh told Amar Ujala that Muslim voters still stand with his party. The votes polled by SP candidates are proof that their core voter is still with them. But he admitted that he had to suffer the division of votes in Azamgarh due to the Muslim candidate of the BSP. The SP spokesperson alleged that the UP government misused the administration and erred first during the voting and later during the counting of votes and won.
BJP wins hearts of voters
Uttar Pradesh BJP leader Sanjay Chaudhary said that Azamgarh and Rampur cannot be called forts of Samajwadi Party. In both these seats, SP has lost in the past and BJP candidates have won. He said that due to the public welfare works of the Central and UP governments, the public’s trust in them has increased and as a result of this, BJP has won both these seats today.
