BCCI President Sourav Ganguly is not happy with the frequent change of captain in Team India. He said that he does not consider the decision to have seven captains in seven series as ideal. Actually, after Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah have captained Team India. At the same time, Shikhar Dhawan will be the captain in the ODI series against West Indies.
Ganguly gave an interview to news agency PTI on Friday (July 8) on the day of his 50th birthday. In this, he was asked whether the continuity was affected by the frequent change of captain? To this Ganguly said, “Having seven different captains in a short span of time is not an ideal situation. However, this happened because some unavoidable circumstances arose. Like Rohit was about to lead South Africa in white ball cricket, but he got injured before the tour. That’s why Rahul captained in ODIs.
Ganguly further said, “After this, Rahul got injured a day before the home series against South Africa. Corona got infected when Rohit was playing a practice match in England. No one is responsible for such situations. Now the cricket calendar is such that we have to give breaks to the players and then if someone gets hurt, we have to look after the workload management as well. You also have to understand the situation of head coach Rahul Dravid that in each series due to unavoidable circumstances, we had to keep a new captain.
This year India has played nine series, but in every series the players of India kept changing. Ravindra Jadeja and Rohit Sharma were not there in the Africa tour. Bumrah was rested against West Indies. Pujara Rahane was dropped against Sri Lanka. During this, Hardik was constantly out of the team. After this there was no Rohit-Virat against South Africa. The whole youth team went to Ireland and then Rohit did not play in the match against England.
Now in the ODI team against West Indies also there is no senior player in the team. 35-year-old Rohit Sharma is the captain of India in all three formats, but this year he has not been able to play any match on foreign soil. Along with Virat Kohli, players like Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah have to be rested due to the busy schedule.
