Prime Minister Modi during his address at G7 on ‘Investing in a Better Future: Climate, Energy, Health’ said, “There is a misconception that poorer countries… do more harm to the environment. But India’s life span of more than 1000 years History completely refutes this view. Ancient India has seen a time of immense prosperity.”
He said, “We have also endured centuries of slavery. Now independent India is the world’s fastest growing large economy. 17% of the world’s population lives in India. But, our contribution to global carbon emissions is only 5%. ”
What is G-7
The Group of Seven (G7) is a grouping of major industrialized countries that includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This group includes countries that follow the principles of freedom, human rights, democracy and development. This year Germany is hosting the G7.
The G7 holds summits every year during which issues of interest are discussed. Different global issues are discussed in this conference and efforts are made to find solutions for them. The G7 was established in 1975 and the first meeting of the group was held in the same year. In the first meeting, the increasing economic crisis around the world and its solution were discussed. Canada joined this group in the year 1976. Apart from the G7 countries, representatives of other countries are also invited to this conference.
The external affairs ministry said earlier this week that the prime minister would speak on topics such as environment, energy, climate, food security, health, gender equality and democracy in the two sessions of the conference. He will also hold bilateral meetings with leaders of some of the participating countries.
