A high-level US delegation called on Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Monday. The delegation discussed measures to help Sri Lanka deal with the unprecedented economic crisis and severe shortage of essential supplies.
US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Department, US Ambassador Kelly Keiderling and Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie J Chung along with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Robert Kaproth called on the President to discuss the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.
“These are challenging times, but we will continue to support and build long-term partnerships to achieve a prosperous, secure and democratic future for Sri Lanka,” the US ambassador tweeted.
The meeting of the US delegation with President Rajapaksa comes after Electricity and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said the two ministers are scheduled to leave for Russia on Monday to discuss fuel purchases and other diplomatic matters directly with Russian officials. Can you
Earlier, the US Embassy said in a statement that top officials of the US Treasury and State Department arrived here on Sunday on a four-day visit. During this, these top officials will meet political representatives, economists and international organizations to help Sri Lanka in need. Sri Lankans are looking to resolve the current economic crisis and plan for a sustainable and inclusive economy for the future.
Within the past two weeks, the US has announced US$120 million for small and medium-sized businesses, 27 million for the dairy industry in Sri Lanka and $5.75 million for the worst-hit by the economic crisis.
The US also pledged US$6 million to help vulnerable populations survive and provide technical assistance that will help stabilize the economy.
Ukraine war-torn Sri Lanka has remained neutral. Sri Lanka is keen to replenish fuel reserves amid an unprecedented crisis triggered by severe depletion of foreign exchange reserves. On Sunday, the price of petrol was increased by 50 Sri Lankan rupees and diesel by 60 Sri Lankan rupees respectively.
