The Scheduled Castes Commission has issued a notice to Najma Akhtar, the Vice Chancellor of Delhi’s prestigious Jamia Millia University. The University is accused of not implementing the rules regarding reservation prescribed for the Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes under the law in the appointment of employees and promotions given to them. It is alleged that the university administration is deliberately not providing this benefit to the people belonging to the Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes. The commission has asked Najma Akhtar to appear in person on July 19 and present her explanation in the matter.
According to information received from the sources, Harendra Kumar, a former employee of the university itself, has accused the university of not following the rules related to reservation in its appointments properly. He has also accused some officials of Jamia administration of conspiring against him, calling him with caste words and discriminating on caste lines.
Harendra Kumar has also been a student of Jamia Millia Islamia University. It is alleged that some employees of the administration had conspired against Harendra Kumar on false grounds to expel him from the job. He was fired on the basis of these false allegations. In this case, two complaints were received before the commission, acting on which the commission has directed Najma Akhtar to appear before it.
Jamia Millia Islamia University has been in the news a lot in the last few years. It has carved a niche for itself in the country by becoming the center of the anti-citizenship law movement.
