The two-day National Executive meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party was held in Hyderabad. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed this meeting on Sunday. During this, he called Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar. The Prime Minister said, ‘It was in Bhagyanagar that Sardar Patel gave ‘Ek Bharat’. After this statement of the Prime Minister, it is being said that soon the name of Hyderabad can be changed to Bhagyanagar.

It is not even that for the first time someone has called Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar. Even before this, many leaders of BJP, RSS and VHP have called Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar. During the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections in 2020, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar. Then the BJP had also promised that Hyderabad would be renamed as Bhagyanagar if it won the election.

In such a situation, the question is whether the old name of Hyderabad is really Bhagyanagar? What is its history? If it was Bhagyanagar, how did it get its name as Hyderabad? Let’s know…

Where did the mention of Bhagyanagar come from?

In 1816, a British citizen Aaron Arrow Smith prepared a map of Hyderabad. In that map the name of Hyderabad was written in bold letters, below it Bhagyanagar and Golconda were also written. That is, earlier this city was called Hyderabad as well as Golconda and Bhagyanagar. This map has also been published in Nanishetty Shirish’s book ‘Golconda, Hyderabad and Bhagyanagar’.

Why Bhagyanagar got its name, know the big logic

We asked historian Prof. Spoke to Sanjay Chauhan. He said, ‘India’s history is several thousand years old. We all have progressed from Sanatan culture and civilization. There is no doubt that the names of many cities and places of the country were changed by the Muslim rulers who came from outside. Attempts were made to erase most of the old names from history. Bhagyanagar is also a part of it.

Pro. Sanjay further says, three or four arguments can be given about how Bhagyanagar got its name. Everyone has their own different claims.

1. Bhagyanagar named after Bhagya Laxmi temple?

The Bhagyalakshmi temple of Hyderabad is quite famous. The priests of the temple claim that this temple is about 800 years old. According to the priest who has been worshiping for four generations in this temple adjacent to Charminar, earlier there used to be a stone at the place of the temple which had the picture of the goddess and the goddess has been worshiped for 800 years.

From outside the Bhagyalakshmi temple, two silver ornaments are visible at the feet of the goddess, behind which there was also a glimpse of that stone, but it is now broken and broken stones are not worshiped, so put a picture there. and later the idol of the goddess was consecrated. BJP MP from Secunderabad and Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy claims that the history of Bhagyalakshmi temple is older than Char Minar whose construction started in 1591.

2. City named after Bhagyamati

An argument has also come to the fore. It is also mentioned in a research article published by Salarjung Museum. Historian Narendra Luther has also told about this in his book ‘On the History of Bhagyamati’ published in 1992-93.

It is told in the book of historian Mohammad Qasim Firista that during that time the Sultan of Hyderabad started liking a woman named Bhagyamati. So first he renamed the city as Bhagyanagar and later as Hyderabad.
