Controversy is deepening over the recent comments made by the Supreme Court regarding the Nupur Sharma case related to controversial things against the Prophet. On Tuesday, 15 retired judges of the country, 77 bureaucrats and 25 former army officers wrote an open letter calling the comments of Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant and Justice JB Pardiwala unfortunate.
The open statement said that there is no precedent in the history of judiciary of such a derogatory statement. This open letter has been written by Forum for Human Rights and Social Justice, J&K and Ladakh at Jammu. It has demanded that Justice Surya Kant should be removed from the Supreme Court roster till he retires. He should be asked to withdraw his comments made during the hearing of Nupur Sharma case.
Supreme Court crosses Lakshman Rekha
In an open letter, retired judges and other officials have said that in the case of suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma, the apex court has crossed the Lakshman Rekha. There is no such precedent of unfortunate remarks in the history of the judiciary, the letter said. This is an indelible mark on the justice system of the largest democracy. Corrective steps should be taken in this as it can have serious consequences on democratic values and security of the country.

The signatories of the letter include former Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Kshitij Vyas, former Gujarat High Court judge SM Soni, former Rajasthan High Court judges RS Rathore and Prashant Agarwal, former Delhi High Court judge SN Dhingra.
Apart from these, former IAS officers RS Gopalan and S Krishna Kumar, retired Ambassador Niranjan Desai, former DGPs SP Ved and BL Vohra, Lt Gen VK Chaturvedi (Retd) and Air Marshal (Retd) SP Singh have also signed the statement.
