Taapsee Pannu On Playing Mithali Raj: It was a big challenge for her to play the character of Mithali Raj for Taapsee Pannu in the upcoming biopic ‘Shabaash Mithu’. He told how a woman cricketer has to face difficulties in the country. Taapsee also saw it by connecting it to films.
He said, ‘There are two religions in our country – cricket and film. If you call yourself a cricket loving country then you should love women’s cricket equally, you are not just a cricket lover country of men. Cricket matters, not gender. Similarly, the gender of the protagonist should not matter. It should be about how the film is. If you are a male protagonist then you pre-book a film but wait for reviews for a female protagonist. That’s where I joined him”
Didn’t know much about Mithali
Taapsee expressed her embarrassment for not knowing about Mithali’s journey and achievements, until she expressed displeasure at being compared to her male counterparts in cricket. The cricketer retired last month after representing India for more than 23 years.
The biopic will cover the ups and downs, setbacks and glory moments of the cricketer. Taapsee has been the first choice for this film ever since the idea of making a biopic came up. She worked hard and stepped up her game to play the role of the greatest Indian woman cricketer of all time. The film is releasing on 15th July. The actress is also a part of Shah Rukh Khan’s film Dunki with Rajkumar Hirani.
The biggest challenge was to play them
“The biggest challenge for me was to play Mithali on-screen. I noticed her from her journey beyond cricket,” he said. Talking about Taapsee’s first impression, Mithali said, “When the film was announced, I met Taapsee for the first time in Bangalore. She was very devilish with a lot of energy in it.” Taapsee also believes that even though she and Mithali share very opposite personalities, they have similar ideologies and this helped them connect really well.
Inspiration for crores of women
The film traces Mithali Raj’s journey to become a great cricketer and an inspiration to billions of people around the world. Mithali changed the game in her classic pretty style, leaving the sex ratio in an area where the focus is usually on the appearance of women. Shabaash Mithu, directed by Srijit Mukherji and produced by Viacom18 Studios, will release on July 15.
