Earlier, after the commencement of the House, Kailash Gehlot, Law, Justice and Legislative Affairs Minister of the Delhi Government, introduced separate amendment bills on salary hike in the House. After this, the ministers including the members of the assembly discussed it. Despite welcoming the salary hike, the members of the assembly called it inadequate. Along with this, there was also a demand for making additional provisions in this. Participating in the discussion, the Leader of Opposition demanded to increase the support staff of the MLAs. Also assured that the BJP delegation would also meet the President if needed for approval.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that the committee of Delhi Legislative Assembly under the chairmanship of MLA Vishesh Ravi had prepared a proposal for increase in salary in 2015 itself. After this, the bill was sent to the Central Government in the same year after it was passed by the House. The Center had raised some objections to this. Now the central government is ready. Accepting his suggestions, a new bill has been introduced in the House.
He said that the MLAs should not of course expect salary allowances at market rates like those working in the corporate sector, but they should definitely get a little more than what they need. In the context of what is proposed in the bill, that is a good increase. He hoped that an agreement would be reached on this. At the same time, Kailash Gehlot said that MLAs have to do as much work as a person can imagine. For this they should get salary as per their requirement. After discussion, the bills were also passed by the House by voice vote by consensus.
