The Indian government has banned the personal use of jammers, network boosters and repeaters. The Department of Telecommunications and the Ministry of Communications has issued an advisory on July 1, 2022 regarding personal use of wireless jammers and boosters/repeaters. The advisory states that the use of jammers, GPS blockers or other signal jamming devices without the permission of the Government of India is illegal. Privately buying and selling of them has also been completely banned.
The advisory also states that it is illegal in India to advertise, sell, distribute, import or list for sale on any site signal jamming equipment. With respect to signal boosters/repeaters, it is stated that it is illegal to possess, sell or use a mobile signal repeater/booster by any person/entity other than the licensed telecommunications service providers.
The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has welcomed this decision of the government. COAI has said, ‘We welcome the advice of DoT to meet the challenges arising out of installation of signal repeaters/boosters. People are unaware that buying, selling, installing and possessing Mobile Signal Booster (MSB) is an illegal and punishable offense under the Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1933 and the India Telegraph Act, 1885. This adversely affects telecom services and we are glad that the Government of India has recognized its importance in providing a flawless network and telecom experience to citizens across the country.’
