In the Oscar awards, apart from English, films from different countries of the world also participate in the competition to get the award. These films are considered directly in competition if they are screened in a US cinema theater for more than a week according to the set criteria, but films that officially represent a country will compete in the ‘International Feature Film Award’ category. Huh. This is the same category which was earlier called ‘Best Foreign Language Film Award’. Every year a film from India is sent to these awards and you might be surprised to know that the institution which decides about the selection of this film has nothing to do with the Government of India. The selection process for one of the Indian films for next year’s Oscar Awards has begun.
Film Federation of India
Those who make films of different languages made in the country have different organizations in different states of the country. Film Federation of India, an organization formed by combining all these institutions, has been in existence for many years. No one knows what this federation does throughout the year. How much it contributes to the upliftment of Indian cinema, debate, discussion on cinema, how much this institution is involved in the awards of cinema, there is no news anywhere on it. Just before the country’s official entry for the Oscars is sent, its name comes into the limelight.
Jury made up of representatives of unions
The Film Federation of India elects representatives of film unions located in different states every year to select the film to be sent from India. This jury sees the films claiming India’s official entry for the Oscar awards and after discussing them sends one of the films to the Oscar Academy as India’s official entry.
Started from year 1957
The first entry like India in the Oscar awards ceremonies was sent to the film ‘Mother India’ in the year 1957 and it was also successful in being nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Apart from this film, only two more films sent from India have been able to be nominated in this category so far. These films are ‘Salaam Bombay’ nominated in 1988 and ‘Lagaan’ film nominated in 2001 festival.
