Captain Amarinder Singh, the former Chief Minister of Punjab, had formed a new party just before the Punjab Assembly elections- 2022 by parting ways with the Congress. The name of Amarinder Singh’s party is ‘Punjab Lok Congress’ (PLC). Now soon this party will be merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Captain Amarinder Singh is in London these days. There he has had a successful spinal surgery. They will finalize the merger process as soon as they return to India next week.

According to PLC and BJP sources, after this merger, BJP can give Captain a big responsibility in Punjab. It is also believed that in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the subsequent Punjab Assembly elections, the BJP will go alone in 13 Lok Sabha seats and all 117 assembly seats by presenting Captain as the main face.

It is worth noting that Captain had formed a separate party PLC after leaving the Congress, but his party could not show any good in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, although the PLC contested the elections in alliance with the BJP. PLC could not get a single seat and Captain himself lost the election from Patiala.

While forming his party, Captain claimed that many Congress leaders of the state would join his party, but on the contrary, all the leaders who left the Congress started joining BJP instead of PLC. These include the names of Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi and Fatehjung Bajwa. This trend continued even after the assembly elections. Veteran Congress leaders like Sunil Jakhar, Rajkumar Verka, Balbir Sidhu, Sunder Sham Arora, Gurpreet Singh Kangar, Kewal Singh Dhillon joined BJP instead of Captain’s PLC.
