The first monsoon rains in Delhi on Thursday morning brought relief to the people from the scorching heat, while the people of Delhi had to face problems due to jams and water-logging at many places. While the speed of vehicles reduced due to rain, there was a long jam on many roads due to accumulation of water up to one to two feet. Vehicles remained in line for half an hour on many routes. The vehicles were forced to crawl. The Pragati Maidan tunnel was filled with slight water from the Indraprastha side. There was no place in Delhi where the roads were not blocked by water. Delhi Traffic Police had tweeted and appealed people to avoid many routes. The Delhi Traffic Police had to divert traffic on several routes. The Delhi Traffic Police had been getting information about the jam till noon. However, traffic returned to normal in the afternoon.
According to Delhi Traffic Police officials, more than a foot of water had accumulated in the underpass of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. Due to this, people going from Mother Dairy to Shashi Garden had to face traffic jam. IP Estate in front of WHO building, under Zakhira flyover, near Jahangirpuri Metro station, Loni Road roundabout and Azadpur Market underpass were blocked due to waterlogging. Waterlogging was seen at many places on the subway of Delhi-Meerut Expressway. Apart from this, waterlogging was seen in Ghazipur, Patparganj, Geeta Colony, Mayur Vihar, Anand Vihar and Krishna Nagar. Vehicles were seen crawling on the route from Punjabi Bagh to Dhaula Kuan on Ring Road in Raja Garden area. Here people had to face a lot of problems.
Due to water filling in Ashram Chowk and Aali village and Badarpur, there was a jam in the morning itself. A lot of water had accumulated on the road around Munirika on the Outer Ring Road in South Delhi. The Outer Ring Road was jammed from Nehru Place to Munirka. A lot of water had accumulated near Munirka metro station. Due to this, people were facing a lot of trouble in going to the metro. One to two feet of water had accumulated till Khanpur on MB Road. Water had accumulated at many places on Lala Lajpat Rai Marg. This made it difficult to travel in the metro. Vehicles kept rolling from Moti Bagh to Bhikaji Coma Place. The ambulance was also stuck in this jam for a long time. Traffic was severely affected from AIIMS flyover to Dhaula Kuan and airport. The low-lying and adjoining parts of the National Highway were jammed. Apart from this, there was jam in Rohini, Prashant Vihar, Pritampura and Shalimar Bagh. Water logging was also witnessed at Vikas Marg, ISBT Kashmere Gate, Azadpur, Anand Parvat, Inderlok, Keshavpuram and Chandni Chowk. Due to heavy rains, there was heavy traffic jam at ITO, Barapula, Ring Road and borders of the national capital, especially Delhi-Noida border, Chilla border, UP Gate, Delhi-Gurugram road.
Bridge Prahladpur Underpass remained closed for 11.30 hours
The bridge Prahladpur underpass, located near Badarpur on MB Road, started filling with water as soon as it started raining on Thursday morning. Within a short time the underpass was very closed. After this, the underpass was closed for traffic at around eight in the morning. Traffic coming from Badarpur to MB Road was diverted towards Sarita Vihar. Had to change from MB Road to Badarpur near Tughlakabad towards Crowne Plaza. After this, the underpass was opened for traffic at around 6.30 pm. After this, traffic was normalized in MB Road and Badarpur.
People made videos of jams and waterlogging viral on social media
People stuck in jam due to water logging, pictures of roads, markets and residential colonies went viral on social media. One such video showed heavy waterlogging near Rao Tula Rao flyover in south Delhi, through which vehicles were passing. In another video, the cluster bus was stuck and its wheels submerged due to water logging near West Vinod Nagar on NH-9 (Delhi-Meerut Expressway).
