The BJP on Tuesday hit back at the opposition parties, especially the Congress, for protesting against the arrests of Teesta Setalvad and Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair. The BJP alleged that these are functioning as part of a toxic ecosystem where one criminal protects another when he is caught.

BJP said, Teesta was working at the behest of Congress
Criticizing the Congress for joining the protest against Setalvad’s arrest, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia accused it of supporting and opposing judicial actions as per their convenience and asked whether the opposition party had any faith in the judiciary. . Bhatia alleged that the Gujarat Police’s action against him comes after he was strongly condemned by the Supreme Court for leveling false allegations against people, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, over the 2002 riots in the state. Bhatia alleged that Teesta was working at the behest of Congress to end Modi’s political career.

He told a press conference that Setalvad is a small wing for spreading communal hatred. It is headquartered in Congress and is chaired by Sonia Gandhi as CEO. Referring to the Congress’s recent agitation against the Enforcement Directorate questioning its leader Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case, he said that for some people Rahul Gandhi is innocent till proven guilty, but for Modi his standard is proven innocent. Even so, he is guilty. He said that this hypocrisy will not be tolerated.

Bhatia said, Zubair has a bad past
Asked about Zubair’s arrest and opposition leaders’ protest against it, he said that merely declaring himself as a fact-taker does not make one a fact-checker. Bhatia said that he has a bad past and has posted such tweets which have hurt the religious sentiments of a large section of Hindu society.

All major opposition parties and media organizations have condemned Zubair’s arrest by the Delhi Police on Monday for hurting religious sentiments through a tweet. The Editors Guild of India on Tuesday termed it as extremely disturbing and demanded his immediate release. Rahul Gandhi alleged that everyone who exposes BJP’s hatred, bigotry and lies is a threat to him. He had said in a tweet that by arresting one voice of truth only a thousand more would be born. Truth always wins over tyranny.

Criticizing Zubair, Bhatia said if someone is doing fact-checking, he cannot be selective. Bhatia claimed that if he posts content which is favorable to any political party or community, then it is not objective.
